Lutheran Foundation Endowment Opportunity

The Lutheran Foundation is encouraging Fort Wayne area Lutheran schools to plan and prepare for their futures by establishing an endowment fund. Through this program, Lutheran schools have access to the Foundation’s investment management services. The schools’ endowment funds will be tracked separately in sub-accounts but will be pooled with the Foundation’s portfolio and invested in the same manner as the Foundation’s market-traded investments.

The intent of an endowment is to provide operating support to the schools over time through interest, dividends, and investment earnings. An endowment program is a long-term solution to funding challenges. An endowment is not a “quick-fix” or short-term solution to financial challenges. It is planning and preparing for the future.

Through December 31, 2009, the Foundation will match dollar for dollar (up to $16,158) moneys that are placed into an endowment fund. This amount will stay in a restricted account and only the earnings may be used by the school for operating purposes. Any moneys placed in an unrestricted account may be used as desired by the school. Withdrawals from the account will require the signatures of two authorized signatories and the pastor or principal.

Presently, between the Board of Education and the PTL, there is over $8,000 available for Bethlehem’s endowment account. We are thankful to the Ladies Aid who recently donated $181 toward the endowment. Gifts to this endowment fund should be over and above the regular financial support of Bethlehem. The endowment should not interfere with providing Bethlehem with the resources needed for day-to-day operations.

Checks are to be made payable to: Bethlehem Lutheran Church and marked for the endowment fund. You might consider making a gift to the glory of God as a memorial or in joyful recognition of a special blessing (birthday, anniversary, baptism, or other celebration). Gifts received after December 31, 2009, will be placed into the endowment fund but are not eligible to be matched by the Lutheran Foundation.

Questions should be addressed to Neil Stoppenhagen or Dan Buchinger.
